Explore Bermondsey: London's Great Reinvention

Bermondsey sits on the south bank of the Thames, just beyond London Bridge. Today it's one of London's most fashionable neighbourhoods, packed with converted warehouses, independent shops, markets, galleries, bars and restaurants. But beneath the trendy veneer lies a story of constant reinvention.

Few parts of London have changed quite so dramatically over the centuries, which is exactly what makes Bermondsey such a fascinating place to explore. From monasteries and tanneries to biscuit factories and contemporary art galleries, every era has left its mark on the neighbourhood – which is why Bermondsey is the latest addition to the Bowl of Chalk weekend walking tour repertoire.

From marshland to monastery
Like so many parts of London, Bermondsey has experienced multiple reincarnations. It began as a marshy Anglo-Saxon island settlement before becoming a significant religious centre dominated by Bermondsey Abbey. Following Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, much of the Abbey was demolished and the land passed into private hands, making way for grand aristocratic residences.

The Great Fire of London in 1666 triggered another transformation. As wealthy merchants fled the devastated City, many settled in Bermondsey, briefly turning the area into an affluent suburban retreat.

In the mid-eighteenth century, the discovery of a mineral-rich chalybeate spring attracted visitors seeking the water’s supposed health benefits, leading to the creation of a fashionable pleasure resort. The spring has long since disappeared, but Spa Road still preserves the memory.

Leather, industry and Victorian Bermondsey
Bermondsey's fortunes changed again with the arrival of the industrial revolution.

Thanks to easy access to tidal water, the area became Britain's leather-tanning capital. At its peak, more than a third of the nation's leather was processed here. The industry may have vanished, but street names such as Tanner Street and Leathermarket Street still hint at its former importance.

By the Victorian era, Bermondsey had become a landscape of factories, warehouses and railway arches. Many of those industrial buildings survive today, although their purpose has changed dramatically. Warehouses have become luxury apartments, while former railway arches now house cafés, breweries, markets and independent businesses.

Dickens' darkest London
Perhaps the area's most famous literary connection comes courtesy of Charles Dickens.

Bermondsey's notorious Jacob's Island provided the setting for the dramatic climax of Oliver Twist. After murdering Nancy, Bill Sikes flees to the foul-smelling slum to evade an angry mob.

Dickens knew the area first-hand, having accompanied river police patrols through the district. He described Jacob's Island as "the filthiest, the strangest, the most extraordinary of the many localities that are hidden in London".

The reality was every bit as grim as Dickens portrayed. The slum was eventually cleared during the nineteenth century and the Dickens Estate, a 1930s housing development replaced it. Look closely and you'll spot buildings named after characters from Oliver Twist, including Oliver House, Fagin House, Sikes House and Nancy House.

Biscuit Town
Another chapter of Bermondsey's story began in 1866 when Peek Frean opened its vast biscuit factory on Clement's Road.

Employing more than 4,000 local people at its peak, the factory became one of the area's largest employers and earned Bermondsey the nickname "Biscuit Town". For well over a century, the smell of baking biscuits drifted across the neighbourhood before the factory finally closed in 1989.

Bermondsey today
Bermondsey's modern renaissance accelerated with the extension of the Jubilee Line in 1999. Improved transport links transformed the area into one of London's most desirable riverside neighbourhoods and helped attract the wave of redevelopment that continues today.

For visitors today, Bermondsey Street is one of the best places to start exploring. Lined with independent shops, cafés, bakeries, restaurants and galleries, it offers a glimpse of the area's contemporary character while retaining a sense of its historic roots.

Art, fashion and creativity
The area's creative side is equally impressive.

The Fashion and Textile Museum, founded by fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, is impossible to miss thanks to its striking orange and pink exterior. Nearby, the White Cube gallery occupies Europe's largest commercial gallery space and hosts an ever-changing programme of contemporary art exhibitions, with free admission.

A neighbourhood that never stands still
What makes Bermondsey so interesting is that none of its previous incarnations have completely disappeared. The abbey may have gone, the tanneries have fallen silent and the biscuit factory has closed its doors, but traces of each remain hidden in street names, buildings and stories.

It's a neighbourhood that rewards curiosity. Around almost every corner there's a reminder of the people, industries and events that helped shape it.
